Byte Construct were engaged to complete the design and installation of a custom canopy over the existing dome skylight at the Qantas. The seals around existing glazing are 40 years old and had begun to fail, causing water ingress into the building. Conversely, on sunny days a lot of excess heat was being transmitted into the food court below. The canopy was installed over the top of the skylight to reduce both the egress of water into the building and improve its energy efficiency.
Being airside, the project came with a unique set of challenges. A number of permits had to be submitted, careful planning was required for craning materials to the rooftop and most of the works had to be done at night when the areas below the dome were clear of passengers/staff.
Steel was manufactured locally, while measurements and patterns were sent to a specialist manufacturer based in Queensland. Once the canopy was ready for installation, it was lifted onto the roof using a 150T crane and then stretched into position over the course of three days.
A project such as this presents Byte Construct with a valuable opportunity to show off our skill in delivering difficult projects both on budget and to exceptionally high standards.
